About the Cancer Center
The 10,000 square foot Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center, adjoins Avera Queen of Peace Hospital to the north. The $3.5 million facility provides up-to-date radiation oncology and medical oncology to an 11-county region, allowing patients and their families to stay closer to home during treatment for cancer. In 2004, the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center was recognized by the Commission on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons as offering best in cancer care. In 2005, the cancer center earned the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
The Cancer Center staff includes a two medical physicians who specialize in Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncologist, as well as additional professional staff who provide personal, caring services. Located adjacent to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital makes the resources of an entire health care system available. Our philosophy of comprehensive cancer care means that every necessary medical resource will be utilized to help patients return to health. This integration of services and technologies enables our cancer care team to provide a wider range of treatment options right here in Mitchell. Our care is coordinated with all departments, including:

Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center through a partnership with American Cancer Society (ACS) support cancer patients and caregivers with the following programs:
Navigators... A trained individual to support, inform and guide you to community resources throughout your cancer journey.
Cancer Resource Network Navigators are trained individuals who offer support and information and provide a community resource for those affected by cancer.
Look Good, Feel Better is a program where patients in active cancer treatment can learn techniques to restore their self-image and cope with appearance-related side effects.
Reach to Recovery is a program that connects Breast cancer survivors with someone battling breast cancer for one-on-one support and information.
I Can Cope is an educational program for people facing cancer either personally, or as a friend or family caregiver.
In addition to these programs, the Cancer Center works closely with a number of community partners to host cancer screenings and special events; with the goal being to educate and inform the community on the importance of getting routine cancer screenings in order to catch cancer in its earliest stage and to offer support to people battling cancer. The Cancer Center has intentionally targeted its outreach efforts toward cancer prevention and early detection efforts whereas the Mitchell Heart and Soul Cancer Association provides financial assistance and support to cancer patients.
