Get Fit while You Sit!
The Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center and the Avera Queen of Peace Wellness Center sponsors a 30-minute class for cancer patients and their families called "Get Fit While You Sit!" Exercise can help combat the fatigue; boost the immune system; and decrease the risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other conditions. "I Can Cope" Classes
I Can Cope, a series of six free educational classes for individuals with cancer, their families and friends will be hosted by the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center. National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration
Avera Queen of Peace will celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day 2009 with an ice cream social and art show on Saturday, June 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center. According to Charlene Berke, Director of Radiation Oncology and Chairperson of the National Survivors Day event, "The public is invited to join us in this celebration of life! Guests will be invited to view the Lilly Oncology on Canvas, Expressions of a Cancer Journey, art exhibition presented by Eli Lilly and Company in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS). Our guests will also enjoy a free ice cream sundae bar with a variety of toppings." Charlene continued, "At 2:45 p.m. we will gather in front of the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center for prayer and a brief program which will pay special tribute to those who have experienced cancer. At 3:00 p.m. local church bells will ring in unison in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day.
For those who are not able to join us on June 6, the Lilly Oncology on Canvas, Expressions of a Cancer Journey, will be on display at the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center and Physicians Plaza on Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The National Cancer Survivors Day Planning Committee includes representatives from the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center, American Cancer Society, Heart and Sole Cancer Walk Committee, organizers of the Char Greenway Bowling Tournament, and the Avera Queen of Peace Hospitality House.
Health Fairs
The Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center participates in a number of health fairs and other health-related events in Mitchell and area communities to help educate the public on the importance of cancer education and screenings for early detection. Please check our Calendar of Events to find out when the Cancer Center will be attending an event in your community and plan to participate! Fund-raisers
Tough Enough to Wear Pink T-shirts...
...is a fund-raiser co-sponsored by the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation and the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Committee. Since 2006 when the program began, nearly $40,000 has been raised from the sale of ten dollar T-shirts; proceeds go to the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Care Fund to cover the cost of free cancer screenings and education on the importance of early cancer detection. "A Splash of Spirits"...
...is sponsored annually in November by the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation to raise funds for the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Care Fund. The event includes wine, beer and food tasting, live music and a silent auction. For more information, please contact the Cancer Center or call 995-5756.
Char Greenway Memorial Bowling Tournament
