Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

Avera Queen of Peace submitted a grant application to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust requesting $2 million to bring the most advanced cancer technology available for cancer detection and treatment to Mitchell and the region; the grant application was approved and funded on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

The grant funds Brachytherapy for Mitchell and the 19 county region serviced by the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center and also funds the transition from existing analog mammography services to digital mammography and the cost of relocating the service to the Physicians Plaza. The grant request also covers some of the expenses associated with Brachytherapy including the cost of a Physicist's salary and remodeling of the Cancer Center, and renovations to the dosimetry area, the linear accelerator room, and examination rooms.

The grant application also requested funds to relocate mammography to the Physicians Plaza, including the cost of remodeling and the service contract expenses.
