Treatment Types

We offer the following specific types of treatment at the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center. To learn more about treatment types, view our patient education section below or visit the National Cancer Institute website's searchable dictionary of terms.

Brachytherapy

  • Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy delivered internally to a cancer site
  • Brachytherapy is derived from ancient Greek words, "brachy" meaning for short distance and "therapy" meaning treatment
  • Brachytherapy is a time-efficient, accurate, effective and economical way to treat many forms of cancer

High dost rate Brachytherapy - delivered temporarily through a catheter connected to a radioactive source

Low dose rate Brachytherapy - the permanent implanation of radioactive seeds

Chemotherapy (chemo) - is cancer-killing drugs that may be given intravenously (injected into a vein) or by mouth. These drugs travel through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells in the body.

Radiation Therapy - treatment with high-energy rays (such as x-rays) to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. The radiation may come from outside the body (external radiation) or from radioactive materials placed directly in the tumor (brachytherapy). Radiation therapy may be used to shrink the cancer before surgery, to destroy and remaining cancer cells after surgery or as the main treatment. It may also be used as palliative treatment for advanced cancer.
